Hegalush from Rabbits United Forum wrote to the following poem to become the runner up in the MMC Poetry Competition. The poem is titled 'Not Just a Bun'
Not Just a Rabbit
“He bit me, he bit me” sobbed the little girl Stupid rabbit, she thought, how can you be so cruel? “Its been nothing but trouble that rabbit of yours; It does nothing all day, except chew at those bars. It lunges whenever we try to go near; Daddy will sort it, don’t worry my dear”. The rabbit was lonely, the rabbit was hungry The rabbit was bored, he wasn’t really angry. Left on his own for hours on end All that he wanted was his own little friend. He hoped that the girl would approach him more quietly If only he had more space so he could hop about sprightly. But as time went on the black rabbit saw them less Except for a hand shoving in food in the darkness The water had gone green from not being fresh And the hutch had become a total mess! Until one day - something different - the man came to see him He saw a brown box and the man dropped him in. Easing his conscience, the man thought “it’s only a bun” “We can easily get a much nicer one”. Where am I going? Thought the scared little lop And that’s when the movement came to a stop…. “He came in as a stray” to the lady, said the vet “He hasn’t been neutered or vaccinated yet”. “We’ve not got much room, but we’ll make a space. Poor little guy, just look at that face.” The rabbit went to this big place with lots of buns In hutch after hutch, and playing in runs. The rabbit was delighted, he could finally show How he was able to do 3 hops in a row He had fresh veggies, fresh water and loads of fresh hay And he saw that kind lady several times a day “How could anyone think ‘you’re just a bun’ That kind of attitude means my rescue’s overrun”. She’d fuss and she’d stroke until he shut his eyes He’d lick her hand in return, to her surprise. He had a bit of a tough time, he had to have a GA To neuter his hormones, so he could have a friend one day. And the little rabbit was content - apart but one thing But he couldn’t quite think what it was that was missing…. “I think we need to get more tubes and more toys. I really want to give the best to our boys. We are so lucky to have this magical black lop Look at him begging and look at him hop How on earth could anyone not want him as theirs? Just look at him, all he needed was the right space and care” The rabbit was given freedom to roam Wherever he liked in his new forever home. Apart from the kitchen where he’d try to find food And any other places where he’d get up to no good! He had plenty of fuss, and his friend kept him clean Content and happy the bun was serene. Although often in evenings he’d binky and skip And he and his mate were joint at the hip He wasn’t without problems, he had poorly teeth His eyes wept and his skin got sore underneath But his mum and his dad tended him with care And took him to the vet when he needed to go there. “He’s lovely” said the vet, not knowing his past The black lop was admired and loved at last. As they watched their darling binky and run His mum and dad thought “he’s quite a bun”.
The overall winner of the Make Mine Chocolate poetry competion which was organised by Jane from Rabbits United Forum was Tracy. Here is her poem titled 'Not Just A Rabbit'.
Not Nust a Rabbit
Before you take me home today There are just a few things I’d like to say I’ve heard them comment “It’s only a rabbit” But from this moment on, let’s get out of that habit. Before you pay and take me home I don’t want to live my life alone I’d like to have a friend in you But I need to have a bunny friend too. A friend with whom I can run and play And then snuggle up close at the end of the day When the daylight fades and you turn out the light I don’t want to be all on my own at night. I’ve heard them say “They don’t need much, Just food and water and a little hutch” But this is wrong, it’s just not true And my happiness will depend on you. I need space to play and hop and run And toys to make my new home fun I need space to stretch and stand up tall I can’t do that in a hutch that’s small. And when you come to feed me each day Please hang around, don’t rush away If you take the time and stay a while I guarantee I'll make you smile. When you take me home, I’m depending on you To keep me healthy and happy in all that I do It’s a lifetime commitment, you must always be there Even through times when I need special care. So if you decide to take me home today Please listen to what I’ve had to say You can make me happy if you get into the habit Of always remembering I’m ‘not just a rabbit’.
We would like to say thank you to Jane for organising this competition and well done to Tracy for the time and effort she put in to writing her enty. The standard of entry was very high.

Burns Pet, providers of a wonderful range of tasty and natural products for rabbits, have pledged their support to the Make Mine Chocolate! campaign.
Tom Chambers spent three years on our screens as lothario Sam Strachan in the popular BBC drama, Holby City, before putting his dance skills to the test by competing in the sixth series of Strictly Come Dancing. Along with his professional dance partner Camilla Dallerup, the Derbyshire born actor eventually went on to lift the coveted trophy to become Strictly champion. Tom told us "Our rabbits Winston and Clemmie live indoors as houserabbits; they really are part of the family and just love the space, companionship and freedom of living alongside me and my wife Clare."
Here at Make Mine Chocolate!™ we our working hard to spread the message that ‘Chocolate is a Treat, Rabbits are a Commitment’. We are also working hard to increase the education and understanding of these wonderful creatures. One of the many tasks we have also undertaken is the creation and management of the Make Mine Chocolate!™ National Rabbit Rescue Survey. The survey aims to provide accurate annual data covering the number of rabbits in rescue, their source, reasons for surrender etc. It will also provide a central resource of rabbit rescues across the country. The survey started at the beginning of 2009 and will run continuously throughout each and every year. But we hope that one day, in the not too distant future, such work will no longer be required.... The survey is of vital importance; in order to force the very necessary change we sadly have to show, with current data, just how bad situation has become. Rescues know just how bad the situation is, and many report it is getting worse. But we urgently need facts and figures to help prove this to the general population - the time for change is here. Rabbit Rescues Large and Small - PLEASE HELP US! We would like all rescues taking in rabbits to be included in the Make Mine Chocolate!™ Rabbit Rescue Survey. Whether you rescue 1 rabbit or 100, we urgently need your help. Please contact us if you are able to assist in the Make Mine Chocolate!™ National Rabbit Rescue Survey. Thank you.

Now Easter has past, it's easy to forget the plight of thousands of rabbits bought on a whim and abandoned in rescues shortly after, but here at Make Mine Chocolate! we are working hard all year round to show that rabbits are a longer term commitment – taking time, money and a lot of effort to ensure they are cared for properly and have a happy, healthy life. After all, it is the least they deserve! How best to spread this vital message during the lazy, hazy and hot (hopefully!) summer months? With a party, of course!
Introducing ‘Make Mine Chocolate! … What’s Your Event?
We had intitially thought about having a 'Make Nine Chocoalte! week - then we thought why have a week when you can have a whole summer?? Therefore throughout July and August we are asking supporters of the Make Mine Chocolate! rabbit welfare campaign to hold their own Make Mine Chocolate! event – be it a Tea Party, a chocoholics party (yum!), cheese and wine party, ice cream party, a 'look at my cute bunny' party, or any type of party you like where you will be able to help spread the message that rabbits are a big commitment.Throughout July and August we are asking supporters of the Make Mine Chocolate! rabbit welfare campaign to hold their own Make Mine Chocolate! event – be it a Tea Party, a chocoholics party (yum!), cheese and wine party, ice cream party, a 'look at my cute bunny' party, or any type of party you like where you will be able to help spread the message that rabbits are a big commitment. Toyah Supports the Make Mine Chocolate!â„¢ Campaign Toyah Willcox, renowned singer, writer and actor, speaks out about rabbits and adds her voice to the Make Mine Chocolate!â„¢ campaign. What about Toyahs own rabbit? A lovely white rabbit called Willyfred who is loved beyond anything else in the world.. Toyah Writes... Rabbits are beautiful, responsive and intelligent creatures. Like human beings, rabbits respond to sensitive, intelligent and instinctive love. They enjoy company, revel in being given attention and love to be clean and well fed. Please, please don't believe a rabbit is a pet for a child unless you, as an adult are prepared to love and care for the precious creature too. Too many rabbits suffer abandoned, lonely and sometimes brutal lives. A rabbit is one of gods creatures too, so please don't buy one on an impulse just for a child. A rabbit needs adult love and protection too. Toyah Willcox
